Sarah Williams: Shextreme Best Adventure Podcast
With ever-evolving technology deepening our connection with others around the world, we've utilised new mediums of communication to share stories, offer advice and build institutions of female empowerment. Whether the medium is written-word in the form of blogging, spoken word with podcasting or visual with vlogging, our society has never been more connected with one another.
After a somewhat unsuccessful foray into blogging, Sarah Williams was encouraged by friends to switch her methods and get into podcasting. Determined to share her stories and adventures to inspire other women to channel into their wild side, Sarah launched Tough Girl podcast. Sarah explains how starting the podcast wasn't easy, "I know nothing about technology, and I had no idea what podcasts were or how powerful they could be. After doing my research, I started listening to podcasts and began to understand the power of the medium. The power of women being able to share their stories in their words and their voice." With new-found knowledge and enthusiasm, Sarah launched her first few shows 4-years ago on August 4th, 2015. Today, Tough Girl podcast has aired over 200 episodes featuring "women of all ages, and backgrounds, doing a whole range of challenges and adventures."
With a library of adventures already available, Sarah struggles to recall a favourite episode: "I learn something new from every woman that I speak with. What I'm enjoying at the moment is going back and catching up with previous guests to see what they've been up to since we last spoke. I think this is really fascinating as we can follow along more closely with their journey and the different challenges and adventures that they have been doing. I release these episodes on a Thursday as a bonus Tough Girl Extra episode. I have also been asking guests, quick-fire questions at the end of the interview, which can bring up some surprising answers!"
While it may seem daunting at first, starting your own podcast is every bit possible, as Sarah has demonstrated. Here are Sarah's top tips to get you started. "You have to give it a proper chance, it can take a while to learn a new skill, and you will make mistakes along the way, but that is ok! The sooner you start, the sooner you can learn and the sooner you will be able to make improvements. So many people end up quitting too soon because they don't see the results they want. You need to think long term, and about being consistent. For example, I have a new episode coming out every Tuesday at 7 am, which allows me to become a part of people lives and their routine. Be patient, be consistent and enjoy it, enjoy the journey, enjoy the experience, and you have no idea where it could take you!"
With unwavering dedication to further promote women's adventuring, Sarah Williams' efforts with Tough Girl podcast wins the Shextreme Film Festival Best Adventure Podcast Award for 2019.
